Reel Things is the work of filmmaker and photographer Rich Berry.

The way I work

Every project starts with understanding what matters — what you're trying to say, who you're trying to reach and why.

I like to keep the process uncomplicated, collaborative and relaxed. Good work tends to happen when people feel comfortable enough to be themselves.

People first

Most of my work involves people, and many of them aren't used to being in front of a camera.

A big part of my job is making that experience feel comfortable and natural. There's no need to perform — the interesting stuff is usually already there.

Curiosity

I've always been interested in people, places and the details that are easy to overlook.

That curiosity is a big part of how I approach filmmaking and photography. Stories are everywhere when you slow down enough to notice them.

A long way round

I didn't take a particularly direct route into filmmaking. I've lived and worked in Asia, worked in international business, taught, designed things and eventually found my way behind a camera.

Along the way I gained a First Class degree in Adventure Media and a Master's in Creative Practice — some bits of paper that say I can do things.

Nearly two decades later

I've now spent nearly two decades making films and photographs, working with individuals, organisations and communities on projects of all shapes and sizes.

What still interests me is much the same as when I started: meeting interesting people, understanding what matters to them and finding the best way to tell their story.

Everyone has a story. Let's tell it together.
